Critically acclaimed HIV/AIDS film ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ scoops two awards at the Golden Globes on Sunday 12th January 2014
The film is based in Dallas, Texas in 1985 follows the life of ‘Ron Woodroof’ – an electrician and hustler. Ron (played by Matthew McConaughey) is diagnosed HIV-Positive and given a short time to live. He forms an unlikely partnership with a transgender woman with AIDS called ‘Rayon’ (Jared Leto). Together they play the system to get HIV/AIDS patients the medication that they need to survive.
At the Golden Globes on Sunday 12th January 2014 Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto both won Golden Globes for ‘Best Actor’ and ‘Best Supporting Actor’ respectively. Neither McConaughey nor Leto mentioned HIV/AIDS in their acceptance speech – something that has ruffled a few feathers.
The film is also up for three Screen Actors Guild Awards under the categories: Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Cast.
