Saving Lives&#8217; message is clear:\u00a0<em>&#8220;HIV testing is quick, simple and could save your life&#8221;.<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>National HIV Testing Week (NHTW) aims to promote regular testing among key populations. It aims to reduce the numbers of undiagnosed people and those diagnosed late. It is held every November ahead of World AIDS Day. This year, NHTW starts on Saturday 16th November 2019 and runs until Friday November 22nd.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>HIV testing is crucial.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>While new HIV diagnoses have fallen for a third consecutive year, the latest data from Public Health England (PHE) reports forty-three per cent of all diagnoses were late. This means they were diagnosed after the point at which they should have already started life-saving treatment. PHE has once again repeated its warning that people diagnosed late face a ten-fold increased risk of death in the first year.<\/p>\n<p>Population groups with particularly high late diagnoses rates include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Heterosexual men (60%)<\/li>\n<li>Black African adults (52%)<\/li>\n<li>Those aged 50 and older (59%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>People diagnosed late are more likely to experience an AIDS-defining illness at the time of their diagnosis: this was true of 225 people in 2018, a similar number to 2017.<\/p>\n<p><em>Source: Public Health England, HIV and AIDS Reporting System (HARS) &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/hiv-annual-data-tables\">https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/hiv-annual-data-tables\u00a0<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4141\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4141\" style=\"width: 216px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4141 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpositive.org\/sluktest\/wp-content\/uploads\/Steve-Taylor.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"216\" height=\"216\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4141\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr Steve Taylor, HIV Specialist at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital and Clinical Director of Saving Lives<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Dr Steve Taylor asks: did you know these facts about HIV?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>In the UK, there are over <strong>7,000 <\/strong>people living with an undiagnosed HIV infection.<\/li>\n<li>Those who are undiagnosed can spend an average of <strong>three to five years <\/strong>living with HIV before they are diagnosed.<\/li>\n<li>The majority of <strong>new HIV infections<\/strong> can be traced back to someone who was living with HIV but weren\u2019t diagnosed.<\/li>\n<li>Those who are diagnosed late have a<strong> tenfold increase<\/strong> in risk of death within one year.<\/li>\n<li>Late diagnosis can lead to significant long term ill health and disability.<\/li>\n<li>A HIV test can be as \u00a0<strong>s<\/strong><strong>imple as a finger prick<\/strong> and one drop of blood.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Why is HIV Testing so important?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Early diagnosis, combined with effective treatment and care, means people with HIV can have a normal life expectancy.<\/li>\n<li>Effective treatment and care means you won\u2019t pass HIV onto your sexual partners.<\/li>\n<li>When you are on treatment, the levels of virus in your body are so low or undetectable that you \u201cCan\u2019t Pass It on\u201d &#8211; this is known as &#8220;Undetectable = Untransmittable&#8221; or &#8220;U=U&#8221;. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpositive.org\/sluktest\/undetectable-leaflet\/\">Find out more about U=U here.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Testing and treatment also prevents transmission to the unborn child and allows people living with HIV to naturally conceive and deliver a child free of HIV.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Professional Footballer Curtis Davies for Derby City Football Club is a patron of Saving Lives, the Sexual Health and HIV Charity.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpositive.org\/sluktest\/wp-content\/uploads\/Curtis-Davies-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4145\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpositive.org\/sluktest\/wp-content\/uploads\/Curtis-Davies-2-546x380.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"546\" height=\"380\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Curtis said: \u201cIt\u2019s really important that people get themselves tested, times have changed.\u00a0 Getting tested for HIV is the smart thing to do. How many people know that if you\u2019re on effective HIV treatment it\u2019s now a fact that you can\u2019t pass HIV on to your partner?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost people don\u2019t realise that it&#8217;s the people who don\u2019t test and don\u2019t know they have HIV who pass HIV to their partners. It&#8217;s not the people who are positive and on treatment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we could get everybody tested and get everybody who tested positive on treatment we could actually stop HIV altogether! That\u2019s got to be something to aim for.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Dr Steve Taylor, HIV Specialist at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital and Clinical Director of Saving Lives, points out the dangers of not testing:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u201cJust last month I saw a fifty-year-old woman from Tamworth who had only had three sexual partners in her lifetime; she had presented to her GP and various hospitals over ten times in the last two years before somebody eventually thought of doing an HIV test.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">&#8220;She presented really late because nobody considered her to be at risk. What <em>is<\/em> the risk? This is simply having unprotected sex with somebody who is HIV positive and is unaware of that fact. \u00a0If they don\u2019t know; you don\u2019t know so you\u2019ve got to protect yourself until you&#8217;re both tested.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3455\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3455\" style=\"width: 269px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpositive.org\/sluktest\/wp-content\/uploads\/posters-17.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3455 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpositive.org\/sluktest\/wp-content\/uploads\/posters-17-269x380.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"269\" height=\"380\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3455\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Cathy &#8211; Positive Ambassador<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">&#8220;She spent over a month in hospital, was on ITU and very nearly died. What\u2019s tragic is that this could so easily have been avoided if she had just had an HIV test earlier in her life. \u00a0She had probably been living with HIV for over ten years by this point.\u00a0 This is unfortunately all too common.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><strong>&#8220;Last year, around forty-three per cent of people diagnosed with HIV were diagnosed late.\u00a0It&#8217;s even higher in Heterosexual men, Black African adults and those aged fifty and over.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">&#8220;There is still so much stigma around HIV. People are afraid to ask for a test and healthcare professionals think they will offend people by recommending a test.\u00a0The stigma in the Black African and Caribbean communities is even greater &#8211; and it\u2019s even more important to encourage people from these communities to get tested.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><strong>\u201cWe have to change the story. We need to make HIV testing just another routine blood test. \u00a0We need to ensure all people having blood tests when attending A&amp;E are also tested for HIV as a routine part of their care.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">&#8220;When you start a new relationship make sure you both get tested.
