The Welsh national football team were victorious in their Euro 2020 qualifier with Hungary tonight, meaning they have qualified for the tournament, to be held in twelve cities across the continent.

Two of Saving Lives’ sporting ambassadors are in the Welsh side tonight, wearing their country’s shirt and hoping for glory. Keeper Wayne Hennessey, who plays his club football for Crystal Palace, was in the starting eleven for the 2-0 win; and striker Sam Vokes, who’s at Stoke City, was also in the squad.

Sam and Wayne have been ambassadors with us for some years, helping us communicate our message beyond the clinic – and have been a massive support to us throughout this time.

Both players are currently helping front our National HIV Testing Week campaign. “A person who is living with HIV, who is on effective treatment and has undetectable level of virus in their blood, can’t transmit HIV to their sexual partners,” explains Wayne, who at 1-0 in the game tonight saved Szoboszlai’s strike from just twelve yards – and then denied Sallai’s follow-up, too.

“HIV testing saves lives,” agrees Sam. “Together, we can end HIV.”

Today’s medicines mean we can stop the spread of HIV – but to do that, we need to get as many people as possible tested. You can’t get today’s life-saving HIV treatment without a test.

The big Welsh game comes during National HIV Testing Week, so Wayne and Sam’s support means a lot. And well done to the whole team in Cardiff tonight!

Llongyfarchiadau, Cymru!
